Royal Manas National Park-
It is the Manas National Park which is considered as the best of Bhutan where thousands of animal and plant species, many of which are endangered, thrive in this protected animal habitat. This park is also one of the world's biologically outstanding sites.
This park of Bhutan is connected with the southern border of Manas Tiger Reserve of India which is a World Heritage Site. It shares its northern border with Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. This park was a wildlife sanctuary in 1966 and was upgraded to a National Park in 1993. The best time to visit is from November till February.
The wildlife species of this park includes the highly endangered Royal Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, one-horned Indian rhinoceros, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, gangetic dolphin, pangolin and the especially rare golden langur. There are 365 species of birds with the possibility of having another additional 200 species. Some of these are the endangered rufous-necked hornbill, Pallas fishing eagle, great white-bellied heron, spotted wren-babbler, blue-headed rock thrush and emerald cuckoo. The park also has more than 900 types of plants which have immense commercial, medicinal, traditional and religious value.
Jigme Dorji National Park-
This park has an area of 4,349 sq. kms and is the largest in Bhutan. One can watch the sacred peaks of Jomolhari, Tsherimgang and Jichu Drakey from the park. There are glaciers and glacial lakes here which feed water into some of the main rivers of Bhutan.
Tourists will find numerous flowers like the national flower blue poppy, edelweiss, orchids, rhododendrons etc inside the park. Animal species include the snow leopard, takin, royal Bengal tiger, black bears and red panda Most of the popular trekking routes of Bhutan pass through this Park.
Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary-
This wildlife sanctuary covers an area of 1,545 sq. km. Around 100 animal species can be found here like the endangered snow leopard, Royal Bengal tiger and red panda. During winters 150 black necked cranes fly here to spend their winter. There are also lots of butterflies. As per existing records 130 species of butterflies are found here and another 120 species are expected to be discovered. The Rigsum Gompa which is known as the mystic Singye Dzong and Dechenphodrang Lhaghang, the most scenic monastery of Bhutan are located inside this park.
Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary-
It is the newest wildlife sanctuary of Bhutan (2003) and covers an area of 650 sq. kms. This sanctuary has Himalayan terrestrial ecosystems consisting of alpine meadows, temperate forests, and warm broadleaf forests. It is also inhabitated by isolated nomadic tribes. There are rhododendrons and animals like snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, Himalayan red fox, and the hoary-bellied Himalayan squirrel. Even the mythical Yeti (Abominable Snowman) is believed to exist here. Some of the birdlife that can be found here are the Assamese macaw, blood pheasant, grey backed shrike, grey headed woodpecker, common hoopoe, rufous vented tit and dark breasted rose-finch. Plant life includes the blue poppy (national flower of Bhutan), primulas and gentiana, and many medicinal plants like cordyceps etc.
